Points of Light
Pence Gallery, Davis CA
Jiayi Young in collaboration with Shih-Wen Young and Steve Thompson
Medium: light sensors, LEDs, ink and water color on tracing paper
Dimension: 4’ w x 3.5’ h x 1’ d
In “Points of Light”, Steven Thompson’s original score was used to map pitch into color using A.Wallace Rimington’s 1893 mapping scheme. Rimington’s color organ formed basis for projected lights accompanied the 1915 New York premiere of Scriabin’s synesthetic symphony Prometheus: A Poem of Fire. In this installation, lights are illuminated by moving shadows. The photos below show a viewer interacting with the piece, illuminating the lights under the paper as the shadow of her hand passes across the color dots.
